Two Mid-South Events Highlight August Schedule
The 14th annual Judd Hill field day is scheduled for Aug. 30 at the Judd Hill Plantation near Trumann, Ark. Meanwhile, Monsanto will host one of its Technology Showcase events on Aug. 7 at Union City, Tenn.
Matt Moon, coordinator of the Judd Hill event, says attendees will be treated to the usual commercial variety trial tours along with a first-time corn trial. More than 600 acres are being devoted to corn production for the first time in the event’s history.
“The main focus of our event hasn’t changed,” says Moon. “But because so many of our cotton producers now plant corn, we thought it would be beneficial to have a corn trial plot.”
In all, 18 cotton variety trial plots will be on display at Judd Hill. Other topics on the tours will include: cotton fungicide updates, cotton-corn rotation and precision ag.
Worsham To Speak
The keynote speaker will be Berrye Worsham, president and chief executive officer of Cotton Incorporated. Normally, the speaker is a senator or congressman from the area, but Moon says the Democratic National Convention precluded the chance for that opportunity.
“I think it will be great to hear a message from Cotton Incorporated,” says Moon. “Even though we normally hear from one of our local politicians, it will be very timely to find out about Cotton Incorporated’s latest research projects.”
Moon says one of the the reasons why the Judd Hill event differs from other field days is its pure non-commercial message. All of the cottonseed companies have test plots on the farm, giving farmers a chance to view a broader range of information and research data.
The event typically attracts a crowd of between 500 and 600. Although most of the attendees are Arkansas farmers, other visitors previously have traveled from Texas, Missouri and Tennessee to participate in the event.
The Judd Hill event will begin with registration, beginning at 8 a.m. Tours begin at 9 a.m.

Monsanto will focus on three areas of interest at its Technology Showcase event in Union City. Those areas include new technology and genetics, new agronomic practices and future Monsanto developments.
Rob Fraley, Monsanto’s chief technology officer, will discuss how the company is discovering and implementing new innovations for agriculture’s future.
During the tour, company officials will also discuss expanded genetics pipeline, stress mitigation, advanced crop management and Bollgard II.
The event begins at 7 a.m.
